“Reveille on a Winter Morning” by Henry Bacon

The Digital Adjutant is a digital humanities project designed to foster and encourage the application of historical approaches to the study of military organizations, with an emphasis on exploring how the social structures of such organizations evolve over time. To accomplish this, the project employs the capabilities of several digital applications to convert both qualitative and quantitative bureaucratic data compiled by volunteer regiments during the American Civil War (1861-1865) into a suite of online analytical tools and interactive visualizations while simultaneously digitally preserving and providing researchers with quick access to the raw data. The project is designed for use by and appeal to a broad audience including, but not limited to, the general public, academicians, public historians, and military professionals.
